The Phronesis Box

Phronesis (Ancient Greekφρόνησῐςromanized: phrónēsis) is an ancient Greek word for a type of wisdom or intelligence. It is more specifically a type of wisdom relevant to practical action, implying both good judgment and excellence of character and habits, sometimes referred to as "practical virtue". Phronesis was a common topic of discussion in ancient Greek philosophy.

The word was used in Greek philosophy, and such discussions are still influential today. In Aristotelian ethics, for example, in the Nicomachean Ethics, it is distinguished from other words for wisdom and intellectual virtues – such as episteme and techne. Because of its practical character, when it is not simply translated by words meaning wisdom or intelligence, it is often translated as "practical wisdom", and sometimes (more traditionally) as "prudence", from Latin prudentiaThomas McEvilley has proposed that the best translation is "mindfulness". This box was custom designed for Dr. Todd Landman. The required criteria; the box needed to have a specific interior capacity to hold a very precious item, and the box needed a draw tight latch capable of accepting a 1/4" shackle padlock. The interior dimension of the box needed to be 5”x7”, with the height being approximately 2 5/8”. The interior dimensions of width and depth (side to side and front to back) were determined by the size of the object to be placed within the box. However, the height (top to bottom) was driven by the dimensions of the latch. Because the depth (top to bottom) was deeper than the item to be stored within it was thick,  a “riser” was built, lifting the item slightly over 1/2” above the actual bottom of the box. This riser was designed to be removed to utilize the box at full size if desired. At Dr. Landman’s request, the hardware for the box was finished in bright polished brass, and the interior of the box was lined in black velvet. The box itself was crafted from exotic African Padauk, with a hand-rubbed finish. This box matches in style, the box used for the Illumini Spirit Light.

Also provided was a burgundy cloth sash to be wrapped around the enclosed item. This satin sash allowed for the concealed item to be easily removed. To go along with the box, Mooreni also crafted a special lock and key set per Dr. Landman’s specifications.
